Copper & Natural Driftwood Handles Bowl

Copper & Natural Driftwood Handles
Where handcrafted pottery meets the natural beauty of wood and metal.

This exceptional one-of-a-kind ceramic bowl by Long Island artist Jan Barrett brings together three distinctive materials—handcrafted ceramic, copper, and natural driftwood—to create a piece that is as much sculptural art as it is pottery.

The bowl itself features a beautifully organic, free-flowing form with an intentionally irregular rim that emphasizes its handmade character. Layers of glaze move across the surface in gorgeous shades of blue, turquoise, violet, soft green, earthy brown, and warm natural tones. The colors blend and overlap during firing, creating wonderful depth and an almost watercolor-like appearance.

What truly sets this piece apart are its remarkable handcrafted handles. Pieces of natural driftwood have been carefully incorporated into the design and attached to the ceramic bowl with hand-wrapped copper wire. The warm, aged appearance of the copper beautifully complements the natural texture of the wood and the earthy tones of the pottery.

The contrast is striking—the smooth, glossy surface of the glazed ceramic against the rugged texture of the driftwood, joined together by the warm metallic character of the copper. These elements give the bowl a wonderfully organic quality and make it interesting from every angle.

At the center, concentric layers of blue, cream, earth, and violet tones create a natural focal point reminiscent of water, stone, and the changing colors of the shoreline. Combined with the driftwood handles, the entire piece has a distinctly coastal and nature-inspired character.

Every aspect of this creation reflects the artist's hand—from shaping the clay and developing the layered glazes to selecting the driftwood and individually wrapping the copper that joins the different elements together.

Because the ceramic form, glaze reactions, natural driftwood, and hand-worked copper can never be duplicated exactly, this is a true one-of-a-kind Jan Barrett original.
